Principal Process Engineer

 

Role Purpose:

The Principal Process Engineer utilizes technical expertise to develop safe and quality solutions in support of project and discipline requirements with minimal guidance. As the Principal Process Engineer, to ensure successful resolution of complex technical issues on Process Systems to meet project and discipline deliverables. Engage with peers across Regional Centers to promote knowledge sharing and act as a consultant and mentor to less experienced engineers to ensure knowledge transfer, product memory, and application of best practices. The Principal Process Engineer works in conjunction with Discipline Manager, Discipline Leads and engineering staff to seek continuous improvement in both quality and efficiency of work. *The Principal Process Engineer may act as Discipline Lead for assigned projects and/or may be designated as a Technical Expert (TE).

 

Role Contribution:

  1. In order to develop technical solutions with a cross-disciplinary approach, have to: 
    1. Demonstrate depth and breadth of technical knowledge to ensure technical solutions account for design factors such as constructability, install ability, operability, vendor capability, as well as schedule and budgetary constraints
    2. Utilize technical expertise to identify gaps between the design solution and known product specifications; recommend best alternative solution(s)
    3. Utilize Company Products knowledge and how each product relates to the various disciplines to minimize the negative impact on the completion of key project milestones
    4. Communicate the changes that impact the completion of key project milestones to all stakeholders
    5. Proactively provide Discipline Manager and/or Discipline Lead with updates regarding activity status, highlight concerns as they arise, and provide guidance to support Discipline Lead to stay within the allocated budget on the project

The measure of effectiveness in this will be:

  • Feedback from Engineering Project Manager, Discipline Manager and/or Discipline Lead on technical contribution
  • Cost of Non-Quality

 

  1. In order to ensure complex issues for project are successfully resolved, have to:
    1. Utilize established network to resolve complex issues; if issue is outside area of expertise, partner with Technical Expert or Technical Authority to provide Discipline Lead with recommendation or alternative resources to resolve issues
    2. Apply technical expertise as required to build confidence in Discipline capabilities
    3. May act as Subject Matter Expert with Clients to inform and influence decisions as needed to gain perspective and understanding of expectations and deliverables
    4. Ensure lessons learned are documented to enable information sharing on future projects

The measure of effectiveness in this will be:

  • Contribution to continual improvement of Company technical standards
  • Resolution of design changes within agreed budget and timeline
  • Internal/external customer satisfaction

 

  1. To ensure technical quality and safety of engineering deliverables, have to:
    1. Actively share experience/knowledge with peers and participate in all applicable project design reviews
    2. Challenge technical solutions to ensure all options have been considered and promote best approach; apply expertise in the practical application of new technology in industry
    3. Collaborate with Discipline Lead to propose/optimize methodology regarding how to execute the tasks within the framework of project requirements
    4. Ensure activities are completed in compliance with applicable policies, codes, standards, regulations and industry practices
    5. Promote continuous improvement within the Discipline by maintaining/sharing the latest industry developments; conduct research to solve unique and complex problems
    6. Participate in Client facing meetings to influence decision making and resolve complex technical issues based on recognized skills in discipline

The measure of effectiveness in this will be:

  • Proposed technical solution accepted and approved by Client /Classification Agency with no significant extra effort
  • Cost of Non-Quality

 

  1. *If Acting as Lead Engineer: In order that the Project is properly planned, have to:
    1. Take ownership to define and develop Discipline scope by understanding and evaluating the project requirements
    2. Identify dependencies and obtain alignment with project stakeholders to ensure safety and quality are not sacrificed in the effort to meet the project schedule
    3. Collaborate with the Discipline Manager/Engineering Project Manager to accurately forecast man-hours, resource needs, and completion date for deliverables
    4. Set team expectations for quality standards and enforce safety requirements to meet project needs, corporate standards, and industry regulations

The measure of effectiveness in this will be:

  • Productivity = Man-hours earned/man-hour spend
  • Demonstrated understanding of Discipline design impact on other Disciplines
  • Cost of Non-Quality
